Microsoft and Novell Collaboration: happiness for the developers

In these days was out a PressPass that announce a new collaboration between Microsoft and Novell in order to increase Windows and Linux interoperability.

Novell and Microsoft will work together in three primary areas to deliver new solutions to customers, virtualization, Web services management and document format compatibility, collaborating each ones under a storic patent cooperation agreement.

What are the future advantages after this collaboration?

What I can see are essentially two:

  1. Mono (the platform that permits to run applications designed using Microsoft .NET technologies on Linux) will have a consistent improvement in the future and integration between Linux and Microsoft systems will be more easy than now.
  2. Novell will sell more Linux systems because finally he could guarantee an integration with Microsoft's systems.
