Wireless LAN are undoubtely the future and during the next year their diffusion will grow every day more and more. But why this preface?
Today a link signalled by my friend Lorenzo has revealed me a cool research that Microsoft has in progress: VirtualWiFi. VirtualWiFi is a virtualization architecture for wireless LAN (WLAN) cards that abstracts a single WLAN card to appear as multiple virtual WLAN cards to the user. The user can then configure each virtual card to connect to a different wireless network (you will be able to simultaneously connect your machine to multiple wireless networks using just one WLAN card).
The current version of the VirtualWiFi software allows a user to connect a WLAN card to multiple wireless networks. It dynamically adapts to the switching delay incurred by a wireless card, independent of the manufacturer. It also does not require manual intervention for assigning IP addresses on individual networks. Furthermore, this version of VirtualWiFi also provides users with a command-line interface to dynamically add and remove connectivity to a network.
This prototype has been tested under Windows XP with success!
Can you imagine a day a technology like this on our machines, maybe embedded on a layer on Windows? It sounds really cool, expecially when you're on travel and you need connectivity.
First the virtualization of processors, now the virtualization of WiFi cards... when the virtualization of users?
