SQL Server 2005 new product line

Microsoft has just detailed the new product line for Microsoft® SQL Server (TM) 2005. In summary, the SQL Server 2005 product line will consist of the following:

  • SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition , a complete data and analysis platform for large mission-critical business applications
  • SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition , a complete data and analysis platform designed for medium-sized businesses
  • SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition , an affordable, easy-to-use and simple-to-manage database solution for small to medium-sized organizations
  • SQL Server 2005 Express Edition , at no-cost, easy-to-use version of SQL Server 2005 designed for building simple data-driven applications

My question after seeing this news is: with SQL Server 2005 Express totally FREE, will be a long life for MS Access? Developers now will have a great solution for data storage and reasons to use Access are really a few…

Here a graphical resume:

I think the main users of Access aren't developers, but analysts. Access give these people a great amount of DB functionality, and you can very easily e-mail a complete Access database/application. Not so for a SQL Server DB, even Express.

Yes you're undoubtely right Richard and I hope a long life for MS Access because also from the developer pespective it's interesting (sometimes for example I've needs where Access could be useful to test applications or to develop small websites where SQL Server installation is impossible).
