Too much Blog Spamming...

The Blog Spamming is growing... it's the 3rd day that I've to delete spam on my feedback.

We've discussed a lot about the spam problem on blogs and I think that the solution widely adopted now (disabling the feedback feature) is not the correct way to do... Blogs must absolutely be opened for comments but spam must be avoided.

An idea to fight spam on a blog comment could be the adoption of a CAPTCHA image... something like this:

You can write a comment on a blog post only by typing the correct image...

This is not a way to stop all the possible spamming, but with this way you're sure that someone "live" is under the monitor (spamming robots are dead).

A little idea for the CommunityServer::Blogs (.Text) staff is launched...

I've been on the verge of doing this for a while now (way too lazy) - there's an excellent article on MSDN on developing a validator which uses this (http://www.microsoft.com/indonesia/msdn/hip_aspnet.asp) - this makes it INCREDIBLY easy to integrate...

I have a project started for this using that way of authentication. I started it last weekend because of a bunch of spam-sex-comments... I would be able to release it over the weekend if any of you are interested, anyway it will be installed on blogs.clearscreen.com ...

Miguel, I think all of us will appreciate a lot if you release this project to the community. Will be a modification to the .Text feedback page? Can you say something more detailed?

Dotnetjunkies.com should just turn on the moderation functionality build into .text. On weblogs.asp.net we have this turned on / enabled and it's great. You can simply turn on moderation per blog and you only enable the comments you like, and do nothing with the comments you don't like -> no spam whatsoever

Frans, correct me if I'm wrong, but the moderation functionality that you're talking about is a feature of .Text 0.95 or above (DotNetJunkies has an old .Text version previous to 0.95).

Hi stefano... it's a modification to the feedback control and just adds a human validation control similar to the one you described (as used in many many pages) but i have no free time to finish it till friday/saturday... but it's quite simple and easy to install... recompile... and deploy.

The spammers already found a way around the CAPTCHA images. They show the image redirected with their own high-traffic website, and let their users answer the value of the picture. Getting users to answer the picture is an easy task when they get something of it, e.g. a picture. Than this human entered value is used programmatically to access the site of the spam target.
:-(

The spammers have solved this faster then the groups trying to solve the CAPTCHA images programmatically.

Christian, you're true, but a comment way like this don't want to become an absolute way to stop the spam, but only a good way to reduce it a lot... and I think that blog spamming will be highly decreased with CAPTCHA images. Other ideas?

Sorry if anyone has seen this but I thought I'd post it anyway.

http://blogs.officezealot.com/chris/archive/2004/09/24/2997.aspx from Chris Kunicki. It's still based on the CAPTCHA images. But hey it's a point in the right driection.
