Just uninstalled XP SP2

The story:

I've a PC at home with Windows XP Professional SP1, always patched, connected to Internet via an ADSL Line. All is worked good until the installation of XP SP2. 3 days ago 've installed the XP SP2 from Windows Update and the big problems are started...

In summary:

  • The PC is terrible slow now, always, connected or not connected to the net. :(
  • Internet Connection via USB Modem are automatically disconnected after a time of inactivity. I've solved this problem by going to Settings, Control Panel, System Menu, Hardware, and on the Device Manager selecting all the USB Root Hubs and disabling the Power Saving option (the XP SP2 enable it and this caused the disconnection).
  • My Internet connection stops working after some minutes... this is a strange problem... the connection is alive (I'm not disconnected) but I can't surf anything. I've not found solution to this.

After all these problems, the big slow down of the system after the patch, I've found the best solution for the moment: uninstalling the SP2. Now the system works good, performances are better and... I'm really very happy!!

You should look for updated drivers for your devices, especially the USB ADSL modem.

All my systems work just as they did before, no slow down whatsoever...

I second the suggestion to check for new modem drivers. I use a USB modem and have no trouble, so I doubt it's the USB/Windows SP2 that's causing the problems.

Not sure about the slow down you're experiencing. I have had a few problems but nothing like that (the opposite, actually, my system is slightly faster). A few friends of mine have experienced strange problems (like a laptop that needs a hard reboot after every time you try to scroll a web page in firefox) but they haven't found solutions yet, other than the one you came up with: uninstall.

Thans all, I'll try to search for new modem drivers, but I don't know if the problem is it. The slow down is terrible... I've uninstalled the SP2 and the system works more fast now. However, it's a thing to try.

It's really simple luckily... just go to your Control Panel, list the application installed on your pc and remove the SP2 (it's on your list, just click Uninstall on it).

Having the same problem with my own WinXP install. SP2 installed and my ADSL connection just stops passing traffic. The connection is still up although no web pages work and most things stop working. MSN seems unaffected though.

I did some prelim. troublshooting and found that I can still access the 'Net via IP (try pinging some sites via IP rather than DNS) so it may be a DNS related problem. Will try uninstalling SP2 tonight.

Good Luck!

Russel, XP SP2 is on Windows Update service, so all the times that Windows Update checks that on your pc the SP2 is missing, it signals the SP2 as a possible download. I recommend you to disable automatic update, so Wndows Update signals you the presence of updates but you can easily choose what to install and what to discard.

Hello,

I uninstalled SP2 on two XP Pro machines, and now neither of them can connect to the Internet through most programs.

The only programs I have that work are MSN and Yahoo messengers. IE6 is a no go.
The symptoms are identical on both machines, even though i built one of them and the other is a gateway laptop.

I don't get it, crazy microsoft wants to charge me $35 for support. They are out of their mind.

After installing SP2 on my laptop, things are much slower. Boot time is more and all other applications seem to have slowed down also. I'll check for some spywares, but any solutions?

I have had the same problem! SP2 blocked my computer and, after asking HP for support, I have be obliged to restore the system, loosing all my files and software installed.

The important issue is that the problemwas well known by technical people from HP, that ADVISE NOT TO INSTALL IT!!!

The same has bee said to me by my Internet provider!!!

This is unbelievable but is thr reality.

Rgds to you all.

i installed SP2 with no problems a couple of months ago with a P4 2.5 Ghz, everything worked. I upgraded to a new AMD 64bit cpu and motherboard and had to reinstall win XP Pro. As soon as I installed SP2 my internet stopped working, the connection was live and I was sending and receiveing data but couldn't view any web pages on IE6 or firefox after about 3 mins. My only solution was to uninstall SP2 and my internet started working again. I can't understand how it worked a few months ago but didn't when I installed SP2 the second time. Do you have AMD or Pentium CPU's? Could it be a virus? The only thing that has changed is my motherboard and CPU.

Hey Guys

I have had the same problem, on a couple of machines, but not all. I have not been able to narrow down exactly what is causing this, but from what I believe, if you install a service pack or patch, and it causes a problem, the MS (USA only) are obliged to give you free support. They have to log this as a "grace" call.

I have had problems with Service Packs before, and if you call up the US (I am based in the UK) and are nice to the customer service rep. and explain that things were fine until you installed XP SP2, then they log a grace call.

My recommendation would be to download all the latest drivers/firmware for your machine and peripherals. Also download XP SP2 and burn these all to a CD. Format, and install latest drivers as well as SP2 before you connect to the internet. Once you have a fresh base build, see if that solves the problem. Also look out for firewall incompatibility, XP SP2 turns on the Windows firewall, which is better than nothing, but might cause some problems with 3rd party firewalls.

If your machine is still slow, call up MS and explain that SP2 has killed your machine, but you have read on the MS site that it has to be installed for security reasons.

Failing that, I never have these problems on my LINUX box :-) *hint hint*

I had the same DNS problem as mentioned above.

Rebooting the DNS service "fixes" it temporarily. Type this at the command line:

net stop "dns client"
net start "dns client"

I had the same problem...formated my drive, installed XP Pro..but when I installed SP2, firefox and IE took like 10-15 secs to open and my connection was painfully slow but my bro's computer on the same network was fine!!!! I found a file on another site for an SP2 multi connection fix....did and and now I'm back up to speed.

Read the instructions.
