Longhorn: WinFS and memory usage...

One of the greatest feature on Longhorn is obviously WinFS... all the data (documents, images, video, music, contacts, email etc.) are grouped in a unique big catalogue and you can search this catalogue to find what you want.

The Find feature in Longhorn now appears like this:

Wonderful!! Now the way to search for a document is the same way to search for an email or for a telephone number but... what's the price of this power? This:

The WinFS.EXE process (alone) use 140Mb of your RAM and, if you consider what's the RAM usage of Longhorn without WinFS active (more than 500Mb, as you can see below)

you can see that the memory requirements are relevant (more than 700MB!!!!).

Longhorn eats a lot!! I hope that lots of memory usage improvements could be done from here to 2006 because meory usage must be well optimized.

Of course at present rates the 'basic' config of a PC will have 1.5Gb in 2006 :-)

Yes Scott, you're right... in 2006 1,5Gb will be a basic config, but however my post wants only to say that memory is a resource that must be preserved and optimized.

That's always the thing with Windows - and one the Linux guys love to crow about - Windows is a memory hog, unfortunately lots of pretty graphics and usability features inevitably leads to using a lot of memory. A classic is OSX - started with the relatively efficient BSD and quickly started eating up the megabytes as features were added. It's always a tradeoff, GUI richness versus memory usage; for instance, in my XP I have most of the pretty pictures turned off, I just don't need them and they kill perf. I suspect Longhorn will be the same when it arrives - and it's a bit unfair to look at memory usage in a pre-beta as it'll have lots of debug code and similar still lurking around.

Yes, this is only a "preview" so it's surely not well optimized and the graphics engine (wonderful!!!) requires memory to work better. I was sceptic about the 3D feature, but seems really very good! I think it will be a great product.

I see 6 checkboxes of the types. I hope these types are determined from a lookup list that is adjustable? Otherwise this search form is pretty useless (typo's made in that small textbox are easily made) and if there are 'pre-defined types' the store is limited as well.

I just noticed, too, that the I/O usage is nearly 40%! Wow. Incredible.

Yes, really...but we've to remember that it's only a preview version!
